Manchester United are in talks with Brighton over a deal for Carlos Baleba, sources have told ESPN.
United have made contact with Brighton for information about their valuation of the midfielder.
A similar enquiry last summer came to nothing after Brighton quoted £100 million ($136m) for the Cameroon international.
Sources have told ESPN that United believe Brighton could now be willing to accept a lower offer for the 22-year-old, leading to renewed interest.
Brighton are willing to sanction Baleba’s departure if their valuation is met, sources told ESPN. Baleba is currently nursing an ankle injury picked up during preseason.
United have already spent £85m on two midfielders this summer. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans has joined after three seasons at Aston Villa.
Baleba has made 92 Premier League appearances in three years for Brighton after signing from Lille in 2023.
Sources have told ESPN that, as well as a third midfielder, United are also interested in a new left-back to provide competition for Luke Shaw.
Michael Carrick’s team begin their Premier League campaign with a trip to newly-promoted Hull City on Saturday.
