Barcelona register four new players, no repeat of registration problems

Barcelona have registered new signings Rodri, Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and João Cancelo ahead of Sunday’s LaLiga opener against Elche.

Rodri, Gordon and Adeyemi were all inscribed with the Spanish league on Friday, with Cancelo’s registration completed on Saturday.

All four players will therefore be available as the Spanish champions kick off their title defence at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero this weekend, although Rodri is unlikely to feature as he still gets up to match speed.

Barça’s fifth signing of the summer, Jesse Bisiwu, is expected to be registered with the club’s reserve team, who play in the fourth tier of Spanish football.

The fact all players have been registered in advance of Barça’s opening fixture is in stark contrast to previous seasons and a sign that the Catalan club’s finances are improving.

Jules Koundé missed two games in 2022 before finally being registered at the end of August, while Dani Olmo missed matches in 2024 and again, briefly, in 2025 due to Barça exceeding their LaLiga-imposed spending limit.

On other occasions, the club have been forced to utilise a rule which allows them to register new signings in place of players who have been ruled out with long-term injuries.

Vitor Roque was registered in place of Gavi in 2024, while injuries suffered by Andreas Christensen and Marc-André ter Stegen have also been used in the past to inscribe players.

As of March, LaLiga said Barça’s current spending limit had increased to €433 million ($501m) million (very roughly the club’s revenue minus debt repayments and non-sporting expenses), an increase of €82m ($95m) on the €351m ($406m) cap they had at the start of last season.

That rise, along with a return to Spotify Camp Nou, increasing the club’s revenue capacity, has allowed the club to splash on Rodri, Gordon, Adeyemi, Cancelo and Bisiwu this summer at a cost of over €160m ($187m).

Barça have also recuperated money in player exits, most notably Ferran Torres‘ €50m ($58.5m) move to Paris Saint-Germain, and remain in the market for more signings, sources have told ESPN.

A striker is still wanted following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Torres, while there could still be movement in defence, too, with coach Hansi Flick refusing to rule out exits for Alejandro Balde or Jules Kounde on Saturday.
