Sources: Man United assessing Lisandro Martínez comments

Manchester United bosses are assessing Lisandro Martínez‘s comments in the aftermath of the 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid before deciding whether to take disciplinary action against the Argentina defender, sources have told ESPN.

Martinez criticised United director of football Jason Wilcox during a bombshell post-match interview on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old said he “expected more” from Wilcox during the summer transfer window and that the squad is not strong enough “to be ready for this kind of night.”

Sources have told ESPN club bosses discussed Martínez’s comments on Wednesday, which was a designated day off for the players.

The squad is due to return to the club’s Carrington training base on Thursday with Martínez set to find out whether the club will take any further action.

Wilcox, meanwhile, retains the support of United chiefs, sources have told ESPN.

He arrived at Old Trafford as technical director in April 2024 before making the step up to director of football in December in the aftermath of Dan Ashworth’s departure.

Ruben Amorim was sacked as head coach in January after his relationship with Wilcox broke down. It’s understood that minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who was key to Wilcox’s appointment, is happy with his role within United’s hierarchy.
