Sources: United consider Howe, Nagelsmann to replace under-fire Carrick

Manchester United are weighing up replacements with Michael Carrick’s future as head coach in serious doubt, sources told ESPN.

United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday to pile the pressure on Carrick.

It was the second damaging result in five days following a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United have now gone eight games without a win in all competitions and sit 16th in the Premier League, just a point above the relegation places.

Sources have told ESPN that the club are looking at replacements as they consider Carrick’s position.

Former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe and ex-Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann — both currently out of work — are among the contenders.

Former Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna impressed in talks with United’s hierarchy in the summer of 2024 before a decision was taken to retain Erik ten Hag.

Antonio Conte, who left Napoli in the summer, would be open to talks if contacted.

United, according to sources, spent time doing due diligence on a number of coaches before deciding to hand Carrick a two-year contract in May after the 45-year-old’s successful interim spell.

It’s understood there’s a feeling internally that the club are prepared if Carrick is relieved of his duties.

Speaking after the defeat to Bournemouth, Carrick insisted he was in the dark about his future.

“I totally understand the situation,” he said. “I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. Carrying on as normal.”
