Newcastle United have made contact with Manchester City over a deal for Nico González, sources have told ESPN.
City are open to offers, despite González saying during preseason that his intention is to stay at the Etihad Stadium this season. Newcastle are looking to strengthen their midfield after sanctioning Bruno Guimarães‘ £75 million move to Arsenal.
González joined City from Porto in a £50m deal during the winter transfer window in 2025. He has made 59 appearances for the club, scoring four goals — including the winner in last season’s FA Cup semifinal victory over Southampton at Wembley.
If talks with Newcastle progress, the 24-year-old would be the fourth senior midfielder to leave City this summer. Bernardo Silva has joined Real Madrid on a free transfer while Rodri‘s move to Barcelona was confirmed on Tuesday. Tijjani Reijnders has travelled to Saudi Arabia to wrap up his transfer to Al-Qadsiah.
Summer signing Elliot Anderson started in midfield alongside 32-year-old Mateo Kovacic in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.
Sources have told ESPN that City are confident of completing a deal for 18-year-old Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille.
There remains interest in Enzo Fernández despite Chelsea‘s self-imposed deadline with offers passing on Friday.
