Everton’s Martin Sherif fined for breaching FA betting rules

Everton youngster Martin Sherif has been fined for breaching Football Association betting rules.

The 20-year-old, who is yet to make a first-team debut for the Toffees, admitted having caused, permitted or enabled 61 bets to be placed on football matches between November 2024 and February this year.

Sherif has avoided a ban but must pay a £5,000 ($6,600) fine.

In his defence, the forward said he had not personally placed any of the bets, which totalled almost £2,000 ($2,600), but admitted they came from accounts in his name.

An independent regulatory commission hearing took into account Sherif’s prompt admission of guilt after he was charged in August, his cooperation with the procedure and his “genuine remorse.”

Sherif, a Netherlands youth international who joined Everton aged 13, spent last season on loan at Rotherham and Port Vale.

He scored two League One goals for each club across 24 total appearances.

Everton are unbeaten in the Premier League so far this season having won two and drawn three of their first five games.

They sit seventh in the table and will face Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Sunday.
