Taiwo Awoniyi is set to leave Nottingham Forest for Coventry City for a deal worth in the region of £17million ($23m), sources have told ESPN.
Awoniyi, 29, is expected to join Coventry in the next couple of days and be ready to feature in their team for the Premier League opener against Arsenal on Friday.
He joined Forest in 2022 for £17.2m ($23.2m) and was their record signing at the time. But Awoniyi leaves to help Coventry on their return to the top flight.
The Nigeria international was given a guard of honour by his teammates in Forest’s preseason match against Brest on Sunday.
He was probably one of the loveliest guys I’ve met, always friendly, always smiling,” Forest manager Oliver Glasner said after the match.
“Everybody in the club likes him and I could see everybody in the stand likes him because this is what everybody appreciates.
“He always gives 100% for the team, he always gives 100% for the bench, and that’s why he deserves such a farewell, such a guard of honour. That’s why we decided we would give it to him and I wish him all the best at his next club, just not when they play us.”
Awoniyi will become Coventry’s sixth summer signing following the arrivals of Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Lomu Tchaouna, Aurèle Amenda and Caleb Yirenski.
