Man United defender Lisandro Martínez has accused the club’s hierarchy of failing to prepare a “Champions League quality squad” and said that players “expect more from the top” in a fiery interview following a 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid.
The Spanish side took the lead inside the first minute through Pablo Barrios, before doubling their lead late in the second half following a red card to Leny Yoro.
And, after a season in which United have picked up just six points from six Premier League matches, frustrations have boiled over from not just the fans but the players too, with Martínez airing his in the immediate aftermath of the match.
“We had a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, from the people upstairs, to bring in more players to compete, because many teams have signed a lot of players as well,” he said.
“This is not a Champions League quality squad. I think the players can do more, but it’s also important to build a strong squad to be ready for these kinds of nights.”
