Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai scores late penalty to draw at Newcastle

Dominik Szoboszlai scored a stoppage-time equaliser from the penalty spot to rescue a 2-2 draw for Liverpool at Newcastle United on Sunday.

Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle a fifth-minute lead but Cody Gakpo drilled home the equaliser on 55 minutes.

Two minutes later, Elanga charged upfield and laid the ball off to Joe Willock who curled a long-range shot beyond Alisson.

Newcastle were moments from an opening-day win until Lewis Hall fouled Liverpool debutant Víctor Muñoz inside the box, silencing the home faithful. Szoboszlai brilliantly dispatched the penalty in the ninth minute of added time.

Matthias Jaissle, who replaced Eddie Howe, and Andoni Iraola, who has taken over from Arne Slot at Liverpool, shared the spoils on their league debuts with their new clubs.

Alexander Isak, who had an injury-disrupted first season at Liverpool last campaign after joining from Newcastle, was kept quiet on his return to the north-east.

Before the game, an emotional tribute from both clubs was paid to Kevin Keegan. The legend recently died at the age of 75.
