MANCHESTER, England — Lisandro Martínez has been named on the bench for Manchester United ‘s Champions League tie against Roma after his red card against Chelsea.
The defender was at fault for both goals in United’s 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, including conceding a penalty which earned the 28-year-old a second yellow card.
He was dropped from the starting XI against Roma by head coach Michael Carrick and replaced with Ayden Heaven.
“We have to pick a team. We have a good squad, we have decisions to make,” Carrick said when asked about the decision ahead of the game by Amazon Prime.
“We have changed one or two in recent weeks, so we made the decision to go with this team tonight.”
Martínez has suffered a significant dip in form this season and has also criticized director of football Jason Wilcox and the club’s board.
Following his explosive post-match interview after the 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid, he kept his place in the team for the next game against Leeds.
Speaking ahead of Roma’s visit to Old Trafford, Carrick said he had “no concerns” about Martínez’s commitment despite being out of contract at the end of the season.
