Nico González signs for Newcastle from Man City for £52 million

Newcastle United have signed Nico González from Manchester City for £52 million ($70.9m).

The fee is £48 million ($65.4m) plus £4 million ($5.5m) in potential add-ons, sources told ESPN.

The Spaniard arrives as part of a new-look midfield for Newcastle, who have lost Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham this summer.

“I’m really happy to be here at this amazing club, González told Newcastle’s website. “I’ve only heard top words about the club and the city, so I am really excited to live here and to be part of this project.

“I love the black and white shirt already and I can’t wait to start wearing it on the pitch for this club.

“I’ve experienced playing at St. James’ Park twice with Manchester City and it was really tough. The atmosphere was amazing and so passionate.

“I can’t wait to experience that as a home player.”

He was presented to Newcastle supporters before their Carabao Cup second-round clash against Preston North End.

González is the fourth midfield exit from City, following Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders out the exit door.

Like City, for whom Enzo Maresca has replaced the long-serving Pep Guardiola, Newcastle are transitioning from Eddie Howe’s leadership to his replacement Matthias Jaissle.

González previously played for Barcelona, Valencia and Porto before joining City, where he played 36 Premier League games and scored two goals.
